When an emergency occurs you might be warned to get out of town as soon as possible. In most cases you will have only minutes to leave your house. Are you sure you will be able to take everything you need with you? When people are in a hurry, they usually make a lot of mistakes. That is why it is recommended to get prepared to emergencies ahead of time. You need to develop an emergency action plan for your family to increase your chances to survive.
In modern world numerous warning system are working to inform people about possible or coming disasters. In the United States the National Weather Service warns people via television, radio and internet about possible threats. It also has a nationwide radio network which provides recent weather forecasts and could be picked up on special radios. Make sure you have one of such radios for emergency purposes, especially if you live in severe weather conditions.
When you have to evacuate, you need to know where to go. That is why you need to set up a meeting place not very far from your house to get together with all your family members in the case of a fire or other home based emergency. Share your decision with your relatives. Make sure that everyone in your family is prepared and knows where to go. Make sure your kids know about the meeting place as well.
You should also set up a meeting place for major disasters like floods, tornados and earthquakes. Try to pick a place about an hour away from your house and develop plans on how you could get there. Keep in mind that some roads could be blocked. That is why you need to have at least several optional routes. When travelling in the car during an emergency never drive into water on the road. You should always remember no to leave your car near the broken power lines.
In most disasters you will have to shut off gas, water and electricity in your house. Make sure all your family members know where the shut off valves are located. Teach your kids to operate them. If any tools or wrenches are required to shut off water and gas, make sure to leave them close to the valves.
You should also keep a record of your valuable possessions. A written list should work well for this purpose. You could also use your video camera to do this. Your furniture and electronics need to be recorded. Serial numbers should be written down as well. In this case you will be able to give your recent record to the insurance company and get at least some of your money back.
