Wherever an emergency situation occurs we need to be prepared to it. You need to be prepared to emergencies at home, in the office, at school and in your car. Here we are going to speak about preparing your car to possible emergencies as this is often overlooked by many people.
The first thing to have in your car for emergency purposes is food. It is usually recommended to have at least a three day supply of non-perishable foods in your vehicle. It is not recommended to store bought food in your car though as it could easily get spoiled. Most food products are not appropriate for long term storage under varied temperature conditions. Many survivalists recommend having dried foods or MRE’s in your car. Many of such food bars have a shelf life of ten years and even more. These foods are also high calorie ones and could be perfectly used for emergency situations. Many of these foods have one more important advantage – they do not provoke thirst. And this is very important for people who do not have access to drinking water.
Military rations could also work really well for car emergencies as they provide sufficient nutrition and could help you survive until help comes. They do not require preparation and have a long shelf life.
When setting up an emergency kit for your car it is advisable to account the maximum number of people in your family. If there is a single car in your family, then it needs to have a three day supply of water for all your family members as well. If there are several cars in your household, then each one of them needs to have an emergency kit and a corresponding supply of water.
Storing regular bottled water works well for short term periods of time. But this type of water might not be stored long term under extreme temperature changes. There are special water pouches for you to consider for these purposes. These pouches could last for up to five years and each one of them has a stamped date on the package. Having a three day supply of such pouches for each family member is advisable. Remember that water is the most important thing to have in emergencies.
That is why it is also recommended to have a water filter in your vehicle. Some people also get water purification tablets as they are lightweight and cheap.
Aside from food and water you need to make sure that your car is safe and comfortable to survive possible emergencies. Thermal space blankets, some warm clothes, gloves and hats are really good to have in your car. Some rain ponchos may also be very handy.
