Getting Ready To Medical Emergencies

All of us know that emergencies do happen. We also know that emergencies could be of different types. Today we are going to discuss medical emergencies and what should be done to be prepared for them. Just imagine that one of your friends or relatives has an unexpected medical emergency. You will have to call the medical emergency service and to provide all important information about the person’s health.

Paramedics will also need some important information from you. In most cases you will have to accompany the person to a hospital. You may need to register him or her at the emergency room and provide necessary documentations including health insurance. Doctors will need your answers to be able to make important decisions regarding your friend’s health. You might become a person who needs to take charge. And you need to be prepared to that.

When we hear the words “emergency preparedness”, most of us think of food, water and other items required to survive natural and man-made disasters. But when we think of medical emergencies, we believe that calling the emergency phone number will be enough. We expect medical staff to take care of everything. However, this could be a big mistake and you need to think about it once again.

Sometimes your family member might not be able to speak to the medical staff due to his or her health condition. They might be unconscious and alone without being able to answer all important questions. Their medical records might be unavailable (for example, if your kid is at school). You might not be within the reach when an emergency occurs. You could be on vacation, on a business trip or somewhere else.

What should be done to ensure that the doctors will still have all important information? You need to prepare an emergency document. You should try to type all important medical information and print in out. Save the file on your computer as well to be able to change or add information to it easily. This document could also be written by hand.

An emergency document should include person’s name, address, contact family phone numbers and insurance information. You should also write down all prescription medications and known allergies. Any additional information should also be included if it is important.

Once the document is ready you should put it into the envelope, seal it and write on the front of it: “In the case of emergency”. This envelope should be always in your purse, wallet or your kid’s bag. Make sure your family members have this information with them wherever they go. In this case the medical staff will be able to retrieve this information immediately and make right medical decisions.
