How To Encourage Disaster Preparedness

There are several common reasons why many people try to avoid thinking about emergency preparedness. And news channels are one of them. They could really do a good job and warn people about coming emergencies. But at the same time they may contradict themselves. For example, news channels may announce major evacuation and at the same time send a reporter in the middle of evacuation area. This fact makes many people think that hurricanes (or floods etc.) are not a big deal.
If you do teach others emergency preparedness, you need to let them know that most things seem friendlier and safer on TV than they are in real life. News channels die on ratings and viewers. And that is why they try to send their reporters into the middle of the most dangerous events. You should not do the same things they do. You should rather do what they say.
When people actually want to achieve emergency preparedness, they go on internet. But numerous emergency web sites have nothing but hundreds of variations of the emergency items and emergency kits. Some web resources also focus on survivalist information like what plants could be eaten and how to survive off the land. Both categories of web sites do mislead people. The first one tells them that an emergency kit is everything anyone needs to be prepared to possible emergencies. People begin to think that someone will take care of them and they simply need to have some food and a flashlight. Another group of web sites ensures people that emergency is really bad and all of us need to develop these survival skills. The truth is always somewhere in the middle. Try to focus people on something in-between these two options. This will be more realistic.
Of course, having a 72 hour emergency kit is an absolute must for each family. But it is not enough to ensure that you will be able to survive possible emergencies safely. At the same time survival skills are for the most severe disasters. And you need to explain people this fact.
It is much more important to teach families how to stay alive and secure for several weeks. This is what they may really face during evacuation or stay at home emergencies. Try to encourage people having a four week supply of foods and water. This is what could be really handy in case of most emergencies.
Another reason for people not to achieve emergency preparedness is fear. Many people are afraid of changing their life style. People have a fear of losing their current life style. At the same time realistic emergency preparedness does not require huge changes. We just need to make certain modifications in our habits and life style.
