People who live in a safe area where neither hurricanes nor floods occur do not usually think much about getting ready to possible emergencies. Even though you do not think that most natural disasters are worth considering for you it is important to understand that there are always chances for some kind of disaster to happen. Ice storms, heavy rains, strong winds and many other natural emergencies could threaten anyone.
It is not smart to try to fight this fact. You should simply accept it and get an emergency kit for emergency purposes. It is never bad to be prepared. And having an emergency kit somewhere close to the door in your house is always a good idea.
Even though many people do realize that they need a 72 hour emergency kit not many of them actually know what should be found in that kit. And we are going to share some tips with on what items should be present in your emergency kit.
The first thing to put into your emergency bag is food and water. Each member of your family will need from eight to sixteen ounces of water per day. If you are going to buy bottled water for your emergency kit, than you need to make sure that you choose the one with a long shelf life. Try to pick bottles of water that could be stored for five years and even longer. In addition to a sufficient amount of water you should also get some water purification tablets. They are very small and will not take much space in your emergency bag. At the same time they will provide you with drinkable water anywhere you go.
When shopping for emergency foods you need to choose non-perishable food products that could be stored for at least five years as well. Make sure that each person will get from 8 to twelve hundreds of calories each day. It is even better if your family members will get more than this amount of calories. Try to store high calorie foods for winter emergencies as we need more energy to keep our bodies warm.
An important concern is lightning. You need to be able to have some light and to get in touch with the rest of the world during emergencies. It is recommended to have a flashlight that could be recharged by shaking or squeezing. Battery flashlights are not the best choice. They will not serve you very long. On the other hand you might need batteries to power a radio. It will allow you to find out about what is going on in your area. It is also great to have a large candle that could last for 30 hours. Some smaller candles and matches could also be very helpful.
