Many people remember that their parents and grandparents used to store foods for emergency purposes or simply to survive a long winter season. It is clear that this tradition of storing food at home has slowly disappeared. At the same time the need for emergency food storage is becoming more and more important once again. All modern environmental and economic problems and disasters we need to be prepared to anything unexpected and to become self reliant. We all remember earthquakes, snow storms, hurricanes, floods and tornados along with fires and many other types of natural emergencies. All of them lead thousands of people to store freeze dried foods and drinking water just in case something like that happens in their neighborhood.
During the last few years people have become more interested in achieving personal and family emergency preparedness. A large number of American families do store emergency foods and water and they are being motivated by common sense and by uncertainty about their future. Having some emergency foods at your house could actually save your life some day and this is something that should not be overlooked.
We are going to list a few simple steps that could help you achieve emergency preparedness and to develop a home food storage program.
Most survivalists recommend starting with a three day emergency food supply. If you have such a possibility it is even better to start with a seven day food supply. Your food supply needs to be adequate to provide all required nutrition to your family members during the given period of time. Along with foods it is highly important to have enough water. The rule of thumb is to store one gallon of water per day for each adult in your house. If you do have enough storage space it is recommended to store even more water as having some extra water is always good.
The second thing to think about is short term food storage for your family. Short term is referred here to three to six months. There are a lot of options for you to choose from when assembling your short term food storage. You could get freeze dries foods which are available in a large variety of products. Or you could store foods that you eat regularly. The only thing that matters here is to choose non-perishable foods and foods you know how to cook meals from. If you have no idea on how to bake bread, you probably should not store flour. Or you could learn to bake it ahead of time to achieve emergency preparedness.
It is also recommended having an emergency cookbook to help you cook various meals from emergency products and to provide optimal nutrition to your family.
