Some Myths On Emergency Preparedness Disproved

When people get into some emergency situations they begin to blame themselves for not being prepared ahead of time. They begin to realize that more things could have been done to avoid various risks and losses. We are going to discuss some important emergency preparedness steps that could be useful to anyone.

Many people do not do anything to achieve emergency preparedness as they misunderstand the conception of preparedness itself. There are some popular myths on emergency preparedness that stop people from getting prepared to unexpected events.

The first myth is when people think that they could always call 911 and emergency people will come and rescue them. Security begins from your own preparedness, not from somebody else. This of course does not mean that you should not call for help when you need it. We just want you to make sure that there might be situations when you will be left on your own. During major and severe disasters emergency teams are unable to provide help to everyone at a time. And this means that you will have to survive on your own for a certain period of time. And if you want to ensure that your family will be safe, you need to do something to achieve better preparedness. Another important thing to think about is if your family will not require immediate help during a disaster, emergency people will be able to help other families in your neighborhood and more lives will be saved.

Another popular belief is that emergency preparedness includes having a three day disaster kit, a radio, a flashlight and some first aid supplies. Many people are sure that having all of these items is enough to consider yourself being prepared. This is a big mistake according to some survivalists. 72 hours is a very short period of time and it does not seem realistic that severe emergencies could be overcome during such a period of time. Of course, being prepared to a 72 hour emergency is better than nothing, but it is not enough for those who want to be completely prepared. If you really care about your family’s safety, it is recommended to be prepared to at least two weeks. Many natural and man-made emergencies may lead to severe and long term interruptions of regular life. And you need to be prepared to survive them.

It is impossible to create a universal list of emergency supplies and gear that will work well for all families. Each person has unique needs and that is why each emergency kit should include different things. It is highly recommended to think of possible things your family members are not able to survive without for a week or so. All these items need to be included in your emergency kit.
