However, not all people understand how easy and effective it is to store white rice as a part of their food storage. We would like to share some useful tips on storing white rice for long term emergencies.
May people think that rice could become bitter after a few months of storage. The truth is that long grain rice does not get rancid. Many people store it the following way without having any problems with its taste. The rice should be put into Ziploc bags. Then these bags should be packed into 5 gallon plastic container. You should not have any problems with storing rice if you follow the above recommendations.
Some other people store rice in fifty pound bags that they are sold in. these people do not have any problem with rice either.
These facts lead us to the conclusion that the environment is the key factor in storing rice. It matters much more than the type of containers you use to store your rice in.
Experienced survivalists say that rice is the type of food which is the easiest to store for long term. As you already know lots of different methods exists and many of them are very effective. Another cheap way of storing white rice is using 2 liter plastic bottles. These bottles are of food grade plastic and you could easily get plenty of them. When you drink soda out of the bottles, make sure you clean them thoroughly. Hot soapy water usually works well enough. Let the bottles completely dry afterwards. Now you could fill the bottles with rice. Put one small bay leaf into each bottle.
Another way to store rice is to put it into 5 gallon buckets and add some oxygen absorbers to each one of them.
You should store rice the same way you store wheat and other grains. Rice could have a very long shelf life. But it depends on many factors such as temperature, humidity level and light in the storage area. It is highly recommended to store white rice rather than brown as brown rice tend to spoil rather fast.
Here we also want to add a recipe of a rice mixture that could be made ahead and used for emergency food supplies. You need to put the rice and the orzo into your microwave for four minutes. You will need to stir it after every minute. It should become golden brown. Now add bouillon and the spices and put it into the microwave for another 12 minutes. It is ready to eat or to store!
