Gaining Weight During Pregnancy – The Unglamorous Part Of Pregnancy

Let’s admit it; one of the greatest drags about having a baby is weight gain when pregnant. It seems like Mother Nature has “stacked the deck” against us. Between your crazy food cravings and feeling dog-tired constantly just how are we supposed to avoid packing on the pregnancy pounds? I mean, except for these genetic freaks that appear to be skinnier than before they got pregnant and appear like a super model after they have their baby, the rest of us wind up giving the impression of the Good Year blimp.

Well, the good thing is that pregnancy and putting on weight do not really have to go hand in hand. You are able to look really good during pregnancy, maybe not super model good looking, yet you can easliy preserve some semblance of normal weight through diet and exercise to avoid packing on too many pregnancy pounds. Dieting and exercise you say? But I could not even keep a good diet and exercise program going before I got pregnant! That’s ok. Imagine, now you have additional motivation to follow a good dieting and exercise regimen when expecting. You aren’t only doing it for yourself, you are doing it for your little child developing within you.

Let’s take a look at diet first. And, no, I do not mean dieting as in the latest celebrity diet. I am referring to what types of foods you consume and how much of it you take in. Numerous pregnant women rest on the couch like the Queen of Sheeba eating whatever they can get into their mouths. Yes I am referring to those dreadful cravings. Pickles, Ice Cream, Taco Bell, deep fried Twinkies, you name it and expectant women have craved it.

As hard as it may seem to be, it is possible to refrain from these cravings with a little self control. If you want some motivation, be aware that gaining too much weight while pregnant may harm your baby. Studies have shown that women who experience excessive weight gain during pregnancy have a higher risk for gestational diabetes. You don’t have to entirely avoid the foods you crave, just have a little self control. Crave ice cream? Have a small bowl; you don’t have to inhale the entire half gallon. Follow a well-balanced diet made up of different types of foods to obtain all of your nutrients. You really don’t need to eat much more than you did before getting pregnant. “But I am eating for two” you say? Studies have shown that pregnant women only have to consume about 300 additional calories per day to provide their baby a suitable quantity of nutrition.

As far as exercising goes it is safe and healthful to exercise in pregnancy. The advantages are numerous and all very good. From a healthier baby, to an easier pregnancy and delivery it is just a good idea to take part in some sort of exercise when expecting to prevent too much weight gain during pregnancy. There are plenty of maternity physical fitness programs out there. They’ll help motivate you and lead you through a workout program which is made up of exercises properly customized to help not only prevent weight gain during pregnancy but to actually allow you to look fantastic and feel great.
